FYI - Seller accused in eBay fraud "Where's my Acura?" and "My Mercedes?" were the cries of outrage and, after an investigation, a Southern California man has been accused of faking the sales of luxury autos on the Internet auction site eBay. Recent Company News » Acura » eBay Inc. » Mercedes Benz » Nasdaq Latest News » Shorenstein confirms Santa Clara deal » Price wars cut bottom line at Schwab » Greater Bay placed $150M in notes » Gasoline 'may be near' peak as prices breach $3 » Survey: Consultants bullish on economy More » Companies in the News » People in the News David Hung Truong, 35, whose hometown was not made public, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in San Jose for allegedly defrauding eBay users of thousands of dollars in auctions for automobiles he never intended to deliver. According to the indictment, between October 2003 and January 2004, Mr. Truong defrauded eBay users of approximately $40,000 in connection with eBay auctions for automobiles. Federal prosecutors say that as part of a scheme to host auctions online using aliases such as "finestcar2000s" and "acura-r-us," Mr. Truong allegedly deposited proceeds from his scheme into two bank accounts he opened. The automobiles ranged in price from just over $11,000 to over $20,000, including several Acuras and a Mercedes Benz. Ebay, Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY) of Sunnyvale, was not accused of any wrongdoing. The company assisted in the investigation, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for Northern California. |

They probably aren't. The answer is to get active in lobbying politicians to enact laws and immediately reporting the crimes to the proper authorities. I've started a new blog to try to educate people and maybe help. It is http://fraudwar.blogspot.com. |

Ebay, like all businesses should take responsibility for the product or service they are providing to the public. They should do all it takes to ensure that the public is protected and not saying that there are INHERENT RISKS that are unavoided. INHERENT OR UNAVOIDABLE RISKS do not good business SENSE..... Just my thoughts...... |

That is a very good question, I have read several cases where people have been taken by scammers on ebay. I'm not sure if any of you have read this article from last year but it just one of the many articles on the web that I have read where people have gotten taken on ebay http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4073159/ Is eBay doing enough to protect its users? In May a teenager who used eBay to defraud more than one hundred people of a total of £45,000 was sentenced to twelve months detention and training. eBay was criticised by a UK judge late last year for not doing enough to protect its users from the dangers of fraud. I have worked with Ebay's investigators on 2 occasions, both times they were very aggressive. In one case they helped us pursue federal charges against a suspect. I believe they are TRYING to curb fraud, bit it is a big job. |

I have worked with Ebay also, and they did do quite a bit. One of the problems that Ebay and others, have, is that there are so many scams out there, the FTC is absolutely overwhelmed. So, they pick and choose who they will go after. If you lose a relatively small sum (not small to you, small to the government), the chances of it being followed up on are very slim (and I'm talking about if it is under $5,000). The exception to this, is if there are alot of complaints about a certain individual. So, if you get scammed, don't let your pride get in the way, report it to Ebay (if it is an Ebay sale) and definitely report it to the FTC. I know of at least 6 people who did NOT follow up on their scams, one was for "only $27.00" , and the highest was somewhere around $125.00. The problem was, the guy that lost the "only $27.00", happened to be one of over 400 people who got scammed by that one person. I have a couple of other suggestions on what to look for before you buy on Ebay, or any other auction site. See the heading "13 things to look for". It, unfortunately, comes from personal experience. |

Yesterday I told eBay that I was a scam and all they could tell me was : " Thank you for notifying us . Is there anything else I could assist you ? " This is kind of interesting to see how eBay reacts at fraud. I guess all scams should have on their site : " powered by ebay " logos. You can read more about me at : http://private4ever.blogspot.com |

For me the issue is more to do with paypal than ebay. If you have a transaction on ebay and the buyer disputes it then, in my experience, the seller is almost always going to lose. Just recently I sold 1gb of RAM and the buyer claimed I sent 64mb. Obviously I asked him to return it so I could verify his story. He failed to return the item and yet paypal still refunded him! And of course we all know who owns paypal... ebay.
