Auction Fraud Tops Cyber Scams | | Quote: | Auction Fraud Tops Cyber Scams It's a cyber scam that's growing with the popularity of internet auctions.
"There are times when shipping took a while too get there and when you did get the item, there was a time when I got the item, and it wasn't exactly what was described,"says Scott Roberts, Snappy Auctions.
Like him, thousands of people don't get what they expect or end up with nothing at all. While someone on the other side of cyberspace ends up with all the money.
"The criminals can be anywhere in the world and they are communicating via internet and it's difficult for you to know that right away,"says Leonard Crain, Better Business Bureau.
The Better Business Bureau says there are all kinds of ways internet crooks are looking to steal your money. One way is with phony escrow sites.
Instead of making the purchase through E-Bay or Pay Pal., a scam artist will lure a buyer to a fake website.
"When you click on that link it's not taking you to E-Bay's server it's taking you to the scammers server and they have software that can track your strokes and your credid card number,"says Roberts.
Snappy Auctions says the best way to bid safely is to stick with a reputable auction web-site and avoid clicking on third party links.
"The best advice I can give is if you people get that feeling that something is not right and a big red flag goes up, listen to your gut,"says Roberts.
E-Bay, one of the more popular auction sites says there are thousands of people around the world who have been hired to investigate these types of crimes.
