Woman Bilked out of Thousands in Work-At-Home Scam

TOLEDO -- A North Toledo woman is out more than $30,000. She lost it after falling victim to a work-at-home scam.

"I was looking for supplemental income, and I came across an email. The guy was looking for representatives here in America," says Nichole Anderson.

And that's how she met a criminal. The e-mail showed up in her inbox, offering a work at home job as an importer and exporter. "I would purchase raw material for him, back and forth, from Mexico and different companies," she says.

Nichole received a check for $35,000. She was told to cash it, which she did, send the money to another company to purchase goods, and keep 10% for herself. Problem is, the check was a fake.

"Right now, as far as the bank is concerned, I'm on the hook for that $35,000," she says.

That's money the single mother of two just doesn't have. "I'm probably gonna have to get another job, in addition to job I already have. It's gonna be hard," she says.

She's also taking out a loan to pay back the bank.

In the meantime, Nichole wants to make sure nobody else becomes a victim. "It's horrible. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone," she says.

When it comes to work at home offers, you have to be careful. Be suspicious of any opportunity that doesn't pay a regular salary or one that involves an overseas company. Also, do your research, by checking with the Better Business Bureau. Most importantly, be suspicious of any offer that shows up out of the blue, like the one that was emailed to Nichole.
