Scammer's Ad For Bogus Loan Snags Wisconsin Couple

A Wisconsin couple saw an ad in their local newspaper for a $30,000 loan from New Jersey-based Capital Group. The terms were attractive so they applied.

Instead of getting the $30,000 for their home improvement project, the couple is out $2,500.

The ad for Capital Group looked real, but it had been placed, not by the bank, but by a scammer who replaced the company's toll-free number with his own.

The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department said the couple was instructed to send $2,500 to process the loan, which they did. They were contacted again and told to wire an additional $3,000.

That's when they got suspicious and noticed the toll-free number didn't belong to Capital Group.

Authorities say it appears the scammer photocopied a legitimate ad for Capital Group and altered it to carry out the scam.

Financial experts say lenders don't require loan applicants to send payments, since fees are usually deducted from the loan amount.

sorry, i can't answer you but it's a good question. i personally just signed up through dollartime.com (universal escrow) to do this exact thing 2 days ago. today, i got my confirmation that i was accepted and for the next steps to take. well, now dollartime.com doesn't exist and i can't get to the site and i don't know what to do. just get server not found every time i try to go to their site. i heard it was legit and was BBB certified though. sounds like they're just having some website problems but i hope and wish they'd get it fixed so i can figure out what i'm supposed to be doin now and cause it sounded like a really good opportunity.

I was wondering the same thing - the site was down yesderday but is up now- I am doing a Google to see what comes up - also trying to see if the CA State Att. General's web page has anything - but not getting anything yet

I signed up with Dollartime too because it sounded like an awesome work at home opportunity. I got accepted and took the necessary steps. I was skeptical too when I kept checking on their website, but they are having website problems and it looks like it's been fixed - yeah! I've done some research on the local BBB listed in LA (Gardena, CA) to be exact and the company has a "AA" rating. Read the websites below. To date, there are NO complaints listed. On their website, it also states that they have owned their domain for 4 years!

I joined the same thing. Even set up 2 transfers for $10K each. Just tried checking my Chase account and it had been deactivated. I called, they said that this was a scam and that the bank that I was supposed to draw the money from said it was no good. I to checked the BBB, etc. and it all looked good to me. Bottom line they are a fruad stay away!!!

I also signed up with this company. They are listed with online BBB but if you read through the listing it clearly states they are not a member. I opened and account as per their instructions and now my access to that account has been frozen!!!
Please beware of this opportunity. I unfortunately won't have further answers until Monday when the bank opens!!
