AG warns of check scam in Yuma County

The Arizona Attorney General's Office on Wednesday said an unspecified number of Yuma County residents are among some Arizona residents who were targeted in a cashier check scam.

"The best we can do is just get the word out there's a scam," said Andrea Esquer, spokeswoman for the AG's office.

No one has been charged or arrested, Esquer said.

The AG's office over the New Year's weekend was "deluged with calls" from residents complaining they received in the mail letters telling them they won a lottery along with an unsolicited cashier's check, Esquer said.

Esquer said an unspecified number of people got fake cashier's checks in amounts ranging from $3,000 to $6,000. The letters instructed the recipients to cash the checks then send money to pay processing fees on lottery winnings, she said.

Anyone cashing the fake checks could be held liable by the financial institution cashing those bogus checks, she said.

Scams of this nature typically originate outside the United States, Esquer said, adding one such letter bears the name of a phony company headquartered in Toronto, Canada.
"Consumers should not cash unsolicited cashier's checks in connection with unsolicited prizes or awards. With any cashier's check, consumers need to verify that the check is valid and should wait until funds are actually deposited and available before withdrawing funds," according to a news release from the AG's office.

Those who believe they have been a victim of fraud, are asked to call the AG's office in Phoenix at: 1-602-542-5763; in Tucson at 1-520-628-6504; or outside the metro areas at 1-800-352-8431.

Consumers can also file complaints online at www.azag.gov.

Re: International Sweepstakes Lottery Winner Scam

Hello, everyone. I have been through this one many times. The very first time, I was excited when I got the email stating that I won a large sum of money from the UK lottery!! I did what they said, except I did not deposit the check that they wanted me to do. I was so tempted to cash the check so that if it were really a scam, I would be able to pay back the bank. I was not going to deposit it at all. I asked my friends about it and told them that I went through with it up to the point where they sent me the check. The funny thing was that I even told the person that I was very skeptical about it because I thought it would be a scam!! The person told me that it was not a scam at all. I had given only my home address, and phone number. That was it. I still have the emails from the people and I even got a call from another person who claimed that he sent me a check. Now, the fishy thing was that he was in Canada, but the "bank check" was from Texas, USA. How is that possible?? LOL Right there, you know something fishy is going on with that there. Of course, I did not do anything with the check. I just kept it and after it was past the void date, I showed it to my bank and was told that I did the right thing in not doing anything with the check. I have gotten emails and letters of the international sweepstakes and also the international emails stating that someone had died years ago and needing the next kin!! LOL If anyone wants to send me an email, it is vietasianfox45@gmail.com. As my father said, you cannot trust everyone!!

On the side note, I even got scammed by someone whom I thought was a friend!! He wrote a check for $700 and told me to deposit it!! Stupidly, I deposited it and I ended up paying that amount back to the bank, putting me in the negative!! He claimed that he told me not to cash it until that Friday. He even tried to scam me of getting a car as well. I should have known that he was scamming me of a car. He even blocked his number and I should have realized something was fishy right there, but I was too stupid to realize it at the time!! He was the kind of person who could imitate or use other people's voices!! I could not believe I fell for his scams!! I was told that he was sent to prison, but I do not know for what. He had a girlfriend who was with him all the way and helped him the whole time!! My father kicked them out of my apartment and I told him that I would never forgive myself for it!! I was sharing a car with them and they knew I was desperate for a car and they used that to take advantage of me!! My father was mad like crazy when he heard that I got the car with them!! I thought I could trust them, but it turned out that I could not trust them. I had replaced one evil for another evil. I had another couple who stayed at my place before they moved into my place. I had the first couple kicked out since I did not want them to stay any longer. That is another story, but as for the con artists, they are no longer in my life or my apt!!
